Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
Describe the metabolic changes in pregnancy which produce a "diabetogenic stress"
Describe the short-term and long-term morbidities for the woman with gestational diabetes mellitus and her infant
Discuss the need to detect gestational diabetes in pregnancy, and methods presently in use for screening and diagnosis
Explain the use of dietary therapy, the indications for insulin and glyburide, and strategies for monitoring glucose control.
