In Memoriam

Dr. Frederick P. Zuspan, M.D., Founder and President of Perinatal Resources, Inc., coordinated the Columbus Comprehensive Review, held in Columbus, Ohio and  the Annual Review of Obstetrics and Gynecology which is currently held in Orlando Florida.  Dr. Zuspan cared deeply about obstetrics and gynecology, and shared his enthusiasm of learning with attendees of the conferences.

Originally, Dr. Zuspan wanted to become an engineer.  However, after two years of college, World War II began. As a result, he was recruited by the Marines to fly planes that dropped bombs but decided that the Bombers were too slow a plane so he became a fighter pilot and flew the F4U Corsairs, a fighter plane.  In September of 1943, he received his gold wings.  Dr. Zuspan flew the F4U Corsairs in Hawaii, Midway, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.  He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and twelve Air Medals for his efforts in the war.

After serving in World War II, Dr. Zuspan attended The Ohio State University and received his B.A. and M.D. cum laude in 1951.  He decided to become an obstetrician gynecologist.  He did his residency both at Ohio State and continued at Case Western Reserve, when his Departmental Chairman, Alan Barnes, left OSU to become the chairman at Case Western University and asked 2 of his residents (Dr. Zuspan and Dr. Quilligan) to transfer with him to complete the residencies. He was awarded the Oglebay Fellowship in Reproductive Biology.

Dr. Zuspan held Department Chairs at the Medical College of Georgia, the University of Chicago and at The Ohio State University College of Medicine for a total of 27 years.  He is co-Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, former Editor of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension in Pregnancy, former Editor-in-Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology Report, and the founding Editor of the Journal of Reproductive Medicine.  He has authored over 240 original scientific articles, 54 book chapters and edited, and/or written 40 textbooks.  He was the second ob/gyn specialist to be invited to produce a video for the Alpha Omega alpha series on “Leaders in American Medicine”. Dr. Zuspan is an acknowledged international authority on hypertension in pregnancy and his basic research has focused on amines in reproduction.

Viewed as a highly respected doctor, Dr. Zuspan is listed in many different Who’s Who Publications. These include:
